Palm Beach Currumbin SHS have added yet another trophy to their collection after their school's AFL excellence junior team defeated Sydney’s Kildare College team from Wagga Wagga in the Under 14s Northern States Cup in mid September.
The three-day competition held at Bruce Purser Oval and Blacktown Olympic Park AFL/ Cricket facility in New South Wales brought together the best Under 14 school sides from New South Wales, Northern Territory and Queensland.
The Cup competition began on Friday at Bruce Purser Oval with Palm Beach Currumbin (QLD) comfortably defeating Knox Grammar and securing a position in the Sunday final.
Kildare College (NSW) and Centralian Middle School (NT) had an enthralling game with Kildare winning by only eight points to secure the other finals position.
On the second day of the competition all four teams relaxed and mingled and completed an educational part of the competition that included a tour of the Sydney Swans headquarters, light training session, observing the Swans Academy program and a boat cruise through the Sydney Harbour.
But it was back to business on the third day, with the schools returning to Blacktown oval to commence a day of finals and play for the Cup.
Centralian and Knox lined up first for the match to determine 3rd and 4th position.
The Northern Territory’s talent were too good for the NSW Knox Grammar team.
The finals between Palm Beach Currumbin and Kildare was a closely fought game. However, Palm Beach Currumbin ensured they held a small buffer in the third and fourth quarters to win by 21 points.
