COLLINGWOOD'S Nick Maxwell has hit back strongly at former coach and skipper Tony Shaw, who attacked coach Mick Malthouse in the wake of Sunday's loss to Carlton.

Shaw, who coached the Magpies for four seasons, was particularly critical of the veteran coach's use of his nephew Heath Shaw, in the last quarter.

But Maxwell questioned Shaw's right to take shots at Malthouse, who has coached 576 senior AFL/VFL games.

"When it comes to the intricacies of coaching, Mick’s record would stand well above almost anyone to have coached the game," Maxwell wrote on afl.com.au.

"Mick has got the best out of teams everywhere he has coached over many, many years, and continues to develop his methods as the games evolves, year in and year out."
