GEELONG veteran Jimmy Bartel has stepped down from the club's leadership ground, relinquishing the vice-captaincy in the process.
Bartel's decision, which came two days after he joined the board of the AFL Players' Association, was announced at the Cats' season launch at Melbourne's Crown Casino on Thursday night.
"Jimmy should be commended," Geelong coach Chris Scott said. "Although he is no longer a leader in an official capacity, he will continue to be seen as one around the club."
Bartel's move has resulted in two-time All Australian defender Harry Taylor being promoted to vice-captain.
"Harry is a fantastic leader around the club on a daily basis and we see him as a perfect fit for the role of vice-captain," Scott said.
"His relationships with all levels of the team is outstanding and he’s certainly one many look up to."
The Cats have taken the opportunity to refresh their leadership group by promoting experienced midfielder Mathew Stokes and emerging star Mitch Duncan.
Stokes and Duncan join Joel Selwood, Harry Taylor, Tom Hawkins, James Kelly, Andrew Mackie and Steve Johnson in the eight-man group.
The elevation of Stokes, who has played 155 games since debuting in 2006, caps a remarkable turnaround for the 29-year-old.
Back in February 2010, he was banned for seven matches by the leadership ground and fined $5000 after being charged with possession and trafficking of cocaine.
He later pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine but was cleared of the trafficking charge.
After a quiet 2012 season, Stokes has resurrected his career in the past 12 months.
Previously a small forward, he moved into the midfield last year and was a revelation, averaging more than 20 possessions per game.
Stokes' form during the recent NAB Challenge suggests he is set for another big season.
"Stokesy's inclusion in this year’s leadership group is a credit to him," Scott stated.
"He is not only a well-liked member of the team, but also very well-respected from the great relationships he has formed within the club."
Duncan has played 76 games since debuting in 2010.
The 22-year-old was a member of the 2011 premiership team and has been mentioned as a potential captain.
"I'm very privileged and honoured to be part of such a great group that has got so much respect through the whole AFL community," Duncan told geelongcats.com.au.
"It's great that the boys voted for me and I can't wait to get into the role."
