SAM DAY will be a Gold Coast Sun for at least another two seasons after agreeing to a new contract with the club.
The talented big man's contract was due to expire this season but he has renewed it to the end of 2016, by which time the Suns hope he will be one of the emerging big men of the competition.
Day was taken with the No. 3 pick at the 2010 NAB AFL Draft, and has shown some encouraging signs in both attack and defence in three seasons and 42 games with the Suns.
"As we have always maintained, Sam is an extremely important player for us and is someone who has always carried himself as a true professional, both on and off the field," Suns football manager Marcus Ashcroft said.
"His re-signing shows he has faith in the direction of our football club and wants to be a part of its future success."
On the day of the Suns' season-opening game against Richmond at Metricon Stadium, Day said he was pleased with the development at the club.
"I've been enjoying my footy on the Gold Coast and the lifestyle away from football as well," he said.
"The boys are great up here and the club is heading in the right direction so I’m very excited."
Suns skipper Gary Ablett recently told AFL.com.au he was keen to start discussions on a new deal with the club later this season, despite having two years to run on his current contract.
"I'm sure throughout this year I'll be talking to the club and we'll be going through that negotiation process," Ablett said.
