After a dream season in 2009 when he capped off the year by winning the Syd Barker Medal, Andrew Swallow's performance was always going to be pivotal to North's chances.

Attracting more attention from opposition coaches, he was quiet in the opening two rounds, but quickly kicked his season into gear with an outstanding 34-possession effort against the Eagles.

A quiet fortnight followed, however he racked up 13 tackles against both Sydney and Hawthorn, highlighting the improvement in the defensive side of his game.

Swallow was back to his best by round eight with two goals and 29 possessions against the Crows and flew home in the Syd Barker Medal with some great football late in the season.

At just 23, the former East Fremantle midfielder also became more dangerous around the goals and is quickly blossoming as a potential leader of the club.

AFL.com.au’s Steve Lavell says: Proved last year's best and fairest award was no fluke. Took his influence on games to another level and should now be considered an elite midfielder. Reliable in front of goal and the competition's No.1 tackler. Captaincy material.

Highlights: Round 3 v West Coast - 34 possessions, 5 tackles

Round 8 v Adelaide - 29 possessions, 9 tackles, 2 goals

Round 16 v Richmond - 31 possessions, 8 tackles, 1 goal
