PASS MARK FOR 2014: Making the finals and progressing further than last year will help justify some of the list changes made at the end of last season. They still possess a healthy amount of blue chip talent and shouldn't rule out a top-four finish.

NEEDS A BIG YEAR: Quinten Lynch didn't make the impact he was expected to last season and this year's recruitment of Jesse White presents a firm challenge to the premiership Eagle to hold his spot.

FIRST FIVE GAMES: Fremantle (ES), Sydney Swans (ANZ), Geelong (MCG), Richmond (MCG), North Melbourne (MCG)

PLAY TWICE: Hawthorn, Carlton, Essendon, Adelaide, West Coast

TOUGHEST RUN:
The season doesn't start well for the Pies with 2013 finalists in the opening four rounds, including Grand finalists Fremantle to kick things off. Then, they play North Melbourne, Essendon and Carlton before their round eight bye.

DREAM SCENARIO:
Brodie Grundy holds down the No.1 ruck spot all season and doesn't get overawed by the responsibility. Nick Maxwell silences critics who have questioned his place in the team since handing over the captaincy.

WORST NIGHTMARE: While the Pies' fixture improves as the season wears on, a run of losses before the first bye would be catastrophic. A repeat of the injuries that cruelled them in 2013 would also disrupt the coach's sleep.

PRESSURE RATING ON THE COACH: 7/10. A recent two-year contract extension gives Nathan Buckley breathing room but the fact remains he replaced the man that won a premiership and has made significant list changes since. He's got time but wouldn't want a dramatic tumble in his third season.
