AFL UMPIRE Simon Meredith has spent a week in intensive care after falling seriously ill whilst officiating the Sydney Swans-Port Adelaide game at the SCG nearly a fortnight ago.

Meredith, who has umpired the past two Grand Finals, left the field of play five minutes into the final quarter and was physically ill before being looked after by both the Swans and Port Adelaide doctors.

An AFL spokesperson confirmed the 39-year-old was then taken to a Sydney hospital and admitted to intensive care with a serious condition.

Late last week he was transferred to Melbourne where he was hospitalised for several days.

Meredith has since been discharged and is now recovering at home.

It is unknown how long he will be sidelined for.
