TALKS to tie promising young Collingwood ruckman Brodie Grundy to a new contract are progressing strongly, with the emerging Magpie moving closer to penning a deal with the club.

AFL.com.au understands Grundy is set to ignore the possibility to return to his home state South Australia and re-sign with the Magpies on what is likely to be a two or three-year term.

The impending contract extension would add another name to a growing list of important Magpies to be tied down, including Dane Swan and Heritier Lumumba, who signed new deals with Collingwood earlier this month.

Important key-position player Ben Reid, who may spend more time in attack this season, is also expected to recommit to the Pies.

Having been drafted in 2012, Grundy's first AFL contract expires at the end of this season but he enters it as one of the Magpies' most valuable long-term prospects.

He will likely hold down the mantle as the club’s first-choice ruckman after a string of imposing performances at the end of last year.

Grundy surprisingly slipped to pick 18 of his draft class, with clubs reluctant to use an early draft selection on a ruckman.

But although injury curtailed the start of his AFL career, he broke into Collingwood's side last year and played the final seven games of the season, impressing immediately with his deft tap-work and physicality.

Strong, aggressive and capable of kicking goals, the former Sturt ruckman came to football late after a basketball background in his youth.

Grundy is one of five top-20 draft picks the Magpies have accumulated over the past two years as they move into a new era under coach Nathan Buckley.
