NICK Stevens’ latest neck injury is a minor muscle problem and not a recurrence of the prolapsed disc that ended his 2007 season, Carlton says.
Stevens, 28, has not trained since straining a muscle in his neck while lifting weights last week.
But the club says he is on track for a return in the Blues’ season opener against Richmond on March 20.
Stevens has been cleared of damage to his old injury.
Carlton chief executive Greg Swann told the Herald Sun Stevens was a chance to play in Friday’s NAB Challenge match against the Western Bulldogs at MC Labour Park.
"He didn't actually get hit. He did something in the weights room and it has nothing to do with the old injury, and he just ended up ricking his neck. He should be OK," Swann said.
"He has pulled a muscle, and it's a bit like when you wake up and have a stiff neck. This is pretty stiff, but he should play this weekend."
Stevens was named vice-captain to Chris Judd, who Swann says is likely to be given his first run in navy blue colours against the Bulldogs.
“He will play a half or so," Swann said.
"They will pick the team on Wednesday, so we are not sure if it's going to be 10 minutes a quarter or whether he plays the first half then comes off.
"The fitness blokes will have an input into that."
