Sixteen-year-old Simon O’Brien is now aligned to the Power, giving the club first rights to draft him if it wants to.
The Power’s national recruiting manager, Blair Hartley, said O’Brien, from Broken Hill, is a promising forward who also spends time in the midfield.
“He possesses good speed and balance and has shown the ability to kick goals in games,” Hartley said.
“He’s not eligible to be drafted until 2010, so we look forward to putting a lot of time and effort into Simon and see him develop because we see him as a potential AFL player.”
O’Brien joins fellow Broken Hill player, Jordan Johns as the Power’s NSW scholarship holders.
Hartley said Johns has impressed after being signed to the club last year.
“Jordan made the NSW/ACT U18 state team recently, a great effort considering he is a bottom-aged player who isn’t eligible to be drafted until 2009,” Hartley said.
“He’s shown a lot of promise in the games he’s played, starting up forward and moving into the midfield. Jordan has great balance and is still continuing to grow, which is encouraging. He possesses nice skills and we’re looking forward to seeing more of him over the next 12 months.”
