DAYLE Garlett's immediate football future is in doubt after Swan Districts rejected his return to play for the club this season.
Swan Districts' board reportedly voted against allowing Garlett to resume his WAFL career for the club on Thursday night, despite the club formally adding him to its 40-man list on Wednesday.
The WAFL club released a statement on Friday.
"Discussions between Swan Districts and Dayle Garlett’s manager have not revealed his future intentions," the statement said.
"The Swans' board remain concerned for the welfare of the troubled former Hawthorn draftee.
"CEO Tom Bottrell said that the club’s board was particularly happy with the desire and commitment of the player group and Garlett was presently not part of the club’s 2014 plans."
Despite the snub, it is believed Garlett harbours hopes of joining another WAFL club even though he currently sits on Swan Districts' list.
Although Garlett is free to secure a deal with a rival WAFL club, he would be classified as a 10-point player under the league's points cap system.
That high ranking would make it hard for a club to fit him into their points cap with the season already underway.
If Swan Districts decide to take Garlett back, he would be classified only as a one-point player because it's his club of origin.
If Garlett does secure a move to a rival WAFL club, Swan Districts will receive a transfer fee of up to $15,000.
The 20-year-old was recruited by Hawthorn from Swan Districts after kicking 48 goals in 19 games in 2013.
Garlett quit the Hawks on Monday after struggling to cope with the demands of AFL football.
