WELL, Ross Lyon was right about one thing. The Saints' loss to the Sydney Swans in their elimination final last weekend certainly did mark the end of an era.

On Thursday night, St Kilda announced that Lyon would not be accepting the club's offer of a four-year contract.

Rather than embark on a period of developing the Saints' list, the 44-year-old has stepped away.

Mark Harvey was also right when he lamented missed opportunities during his final press conference of the season, after the round 24 loss to the Bulldogs.

Freo's inability to build on its bright start to the season - the club lost its last seven games - has ultimately cost him his job.

Also on Thursday, Fremantle announced that Harvey would not continue as coach, effective immediately, paving the way for Lyon to take over.
