The Claremont juggernaut rolled forward at Claremont Oval on Saturday and a number of West Coast-listed players figured prominently again.
The Tigers eclipsed East Fremantle with Beau Wilkes, Lewis Stevenson, Eric Mackenzie and Tom Swift all key players in the triumph. Stevenson, Wilkes and Mackenzie were part of a miserly Claremont defence while Swift was outstanding through the midfield.
Young utility player Brad Sheppard, in his first game back from injury, was under notice, while other notable performances were produced by Callum Wilson, Ben McKinley, Jarrad Oakley-Niicholls and Ashley Smith.
Swan Districts v Subiaco
Tony Notte
Played the first three quarters at full-back and then was moved deep forward. Played well in defence and his disposal was efficient.
Adam Cockie
Played on-ball and across half-forward where he played a consistent game. His ball use was good and as one would expect he was very good in centre clearances and stoppages, with his physical presence. He capped off his game with a magnificent left foot goal on the run, slight angle.
Claremont v East Fremantle
Gerrick Weedon (reserves)
Resuming from an ankle injury, Weedon did not enjoy a great day. Had only eight possessions, but will be better for the run.
Lewis Broome (reserves)
Playing mainly at half-forward, Broome also struggled to get into the game, although he did kick a good goals and his defensive pressure was good.
Ryan Neates (reserves)
After an outstanding first half, where his work rate was very good, he faded a little after half-time. His decision making and ball use were very good and he continues to build after an injury enforced delay to the season.
Beau Wilkes
Stationed at centre half-back, Wilkes controlled this position all day. As the game progressed he became more precise with his disposal, linking up and providing plenty of rebound from half back. On numerous occasions he took strong pack marks and was one of Claremont’s best players on the day.
Lewis Stevenson
Maintained his outstanding form off half-back and ran with great intensity to receive the ball and get involved in the flow of play. He positioned himself cleverly to become the quarterback and then finished off his work with great skills on both sides of his body. He kicked a fantastic goal on the run from 60m. Close to best on ground.
Tom Swift
Tom played on ball and improved as the game progressed. He was matched up against Koby Stevens for large periods of the game and had the better of this duel. His contested play around the clearances was good, used his speed to good effect to break away from stoppages a couple of times and kicked a good goal.
Eric Mackenzie
Played at half-back and won his position. He gathered numerous and when he received the ball forward of centre he penetrated the forward 50 on five occasions with long kicks to the advantage of teammates. Gaining in confidence with every week.
Brad Sheppard
Used in a variety of roles in the back half and through the midfield. When in the middle he showed his potential as an on-baller with some good work in close. Used his speed and agility to kick two very good running goals and was a good performer in a team beaten by 10 goals.
Koby Stevens
One of those days where he worked hard for little reward and when he was around the ball appeared a little flat. After playing as a half-forward in the second half he left the ground with cramp.
South Fremantle v Peel
Callum Wilson
After a slow start, Wilson did well in a forward structure that saw him mainly play across half-forward, with short stints closer to goal. His work rate was very good and he took some good strong marks. He kicked four goals but it could easily have been six.
Jordan Jones
A solid four-quarter effort at half-back, with some time in midfield in a team that was well beaten. His work rate was very consistent and his ball use and decision making were good. A consistent effort, where he was one of his team’s better players.
East Perth v Perth
Ben McKinley
Presented directly at the ball carrier and marked well at speed on several occasions. Was tagged for the entire game and played predominantly between half-forward and full-forward with some short stints in the midfield for centre bounces. In the first half did not kick a goal from four shots, but was more effective with his kicking in the second half with three goals.
Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls
Settled nicely into the game and appeared to keep things simple, kicking with good balance and weight on his disposals to leading forwards. He showed good speed when carrying the ball and used the first option that presented. Tackling was another highlight of his game, applying good pressure on the opposition ball carriers.
Ashley Smith
Started the game very positively against Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls, providing very strong run off half-back and using the ball effectively. Smith’s second quarter was below his earlier output as was that of his team. His kicking skills were effective throughout the game, played across half-forward in the second half and was lively.
Will Sullivan
Ran hard to position around the ground to link up the play through the midfield and his ruck contest work after quarter time was good. Finished the game with more possessions and hit outs than his opponent and was a handy contributor for the Demons.
