ESSENDON has confirmed that mature-age recruit Nick Kommer will make his debut in Friday night's season opener against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.

The Bombers have also picked Michael Hurley and David Zaharakis, despite the pair suffering injury problems in recent weeks.

Zaharakis, whose pre-season was derailed by a quad strain, only played his first game for the year in the VFL last weekend, so he is likely to be named their sub.

Along with Kommer, star recruit Brendon Goddard will also play his first game for Essendon.

Goddard has been selected on a half-back flank.

Jason Winderlich (groin) is the Bombers' only unavailable player at present.

Adelaide has named Jason Porplyzia, despite star forward spending time in hospital two weeks ago after being struck down by a stomach ulcer.

But fellow small forward Ian Callinan, who was subbed out of the round three NAB Cup match against Carlton on March 8 after receiving a knock to his knee, has been left out.

With Kurt Tippett now at the Sydney Swans, Josh Jenkins will support Taylor Walker in the key forward posts.

Much-hyped youngster Brad Crouch is among Adelaide's three emergencies.

Fremantle has been forced to leave big man Zac Clarke out of its team to play West Coast at Patersons Stadium on Saturday evening.

Clarke suffered a foot injury at training earlier this week.

With Aaron Sandilands sidelined by a hamstring problem, Jon Griffin and Kepler Bradley will carry the rucking load.

Mature-age ruck recruit Jack Hannath has been named as one of Freo's three emergencies.

Former Port Adelaide player Danyle Pearce will play his first game for the club.

With Nic Naitanui sidelined by a groin injury, West Coast has named Scott Lycett to provide support for Dean Cox in the ruck.

Andrew Embley has been named on the wing, despite missing much of the NAB Cup with a hamstring injury.

Former St Kilda half-forward Jamie Cripps will play his first game for the Eagles, while Mark LeCras will make his first home and away appearance since 2011.

West Coast's selectors were unable to call upon ex-Collingwood wingman Sharrod Wellingham (ankle), veteran midfielder Daniel Kerr (knee) and fellow onballer Matt Rosa (quad).
