ANDREW Demetriou has revealed the AFL may extend the length of the premiership season.
Speaking on Melbourne radio SEN, Demetriou said a move on the season length may be made in order to curb the advantage rival codes have in starting their respective seasons earlier.
"If the players had a longer break (over the off-season), I can assure you they'd have more of a mind to perhaps have a different variation on the season (length)," Demetriou said.
"Why should we close our mind to that? Particularly if you're looking at a longer (off-season) break. We're just doing work now on this issue.
"There's got to be a pre-season competition. The players will tell you and all the guys in high performance that you've got to get some runs under the belt for the players but whether they need four hit-outs or two against other teams and maybe they play an intra-club game - I think that's got some merit."
Demetriou also said that while the recommendation of the AFL's laws committee was to cap interchange rotations next year at 80, that figure was subject to change based on more work through 2013.
"We'll get some data from the NAB Cup and the AFL injury survey," Demetriou said.
"We're waiting on some information on the speed of the game from 2012. There'll be a cap - what it will be is 80, subject to a change based on information. Hearing from the captains and clubs, they want to know early so we're working towards that."
Demetriou also revealed:
- Round one of the 2014 season would feature the Adelaide derby between the Crows and Port Adelaide at the redeveloped Adelaide Oval
- The ASADA investigation into Essendon was on-going and could still "drag out for months"
- As a general rule, he was completely against coaches taking any performance enhancing drugs, let alone players
- The League has begun work on the issue of a third ground in Melbourne, focusing on Punt Road due to its proximity to public transport
