SCOTT WATTERS says the Saints will be "very aggressive" when they go shopping for defenders in the off-season after being exposed by Richmond's tall forwards on Sunday. 

Last October, the Saints tried to trade for West Coast backman Mitch Brown but a deal couldn't be struck with the Eagles.  

With defenders Sam Fisher out for the season with a toe injury, Tom Simpkin suspended and Sam Gilbert on his way back from a knee, the job of curtailing the Tigers' forwards in Sunday's 64-point loss fell to James Gwilt and Sean Dempster. 

Rhys Stanley was shifted from attack at half time to help out.

Watters reaffirmed they would go hard at securing that elusive defender in October. 

"It was well documented we went after some players last year," Watters said. 

"We ultimately didn't get what we want, but we can't be a club now that just sits around, hoping that a key defender turns up.

"We need to be very aggressive about making sure we fill that gap."

While he conceded a lack of midfield pressure left the Saints' backmen vulnerable, he emphasised the importance of improving their list.

"We have a terrific recruiting staff who have brought some great players into the club over the last 18 months," he said. 

"They're pretty clear on where our priorities are. Our recruiting staff have got some work to do at the end of the year to make sure we have some key backs on our list."

Watters said the result was disappointing but it was important to keep exposing the youngsters to senior football regardless. 

"There will be some losses like this potentially along the way but I'll play Brodie Murdoch next week, I'll play Jack Newnes next week, Seb Ross et cetera," he said. 

"Whilst we're very disappointed and our players are disappointed tonight, 95 per cent of those players will be getting on a plane next week and going to Perth and they'll get my support to go up and have another crack. 

"That's where we're at."

Lenny Hayes played limited time in the VFL and his availability for next weekend's trip to Perth to play Fremantle on Sunday will be considered. 

Dylan Roberton was on crutches post-match after rolling an ankle and will be assessed this week, along with Sean Dempster, who also hurt his foot.
