There’s no secrets here. We’re all one big happy family, which is why I will give everybody a look at my starting squad for season 2013. Some are obvious choices, but I think some of younger players will make waves early in the season. Here’s my team.
Defenders
Brendon Goddard (Essendon) $501,300
Already looks at home in the Bombers’ backline and is clearly the guy to build your defence around.
Jack Grimes (Melbourne) $493,400
His team had a year it would like to forget in 2012, but Grimes still excelled and will score close to 100 if injury free.
Bryce Gibbs (Carlton) $473,300
I like the role he is playing under Malthouse, and was the leading DT scorer for the Blues in last week’s NAB Cup Grand Final (107).
Beau Waters (West Coast) $472,100
Has a presence on the park and teammates are happy to give him the ball to set up from the back half. Obvious choice.
Grant Birchall (Hawthorn) $455,400
Hard-running backman who looks to be in his prime. The inclusion of Brian Lake may give him even more freedom.
Nick Vlastuin (Richmond) $147,700
Some players just look like they belong in the AFL, even when they are just starting out. Cheap and shows enough to suggest he’ll play regular senior footy.
Bench: Lachlan Plowman (GWS) and Brett Goodes (Bulldogs)
Midfielders
Gary Ablett (Gold Coast) $642,500
You pick either Ablett or Swan, but I’m leaning towards the player who still is the best in the competition. Averaged 125 last season.
Trent Cotchin (Richmond) $570,200
He will shine as Richmond captain and his price tag is fair considering his talent and ball-winning ability.
Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood) $568,700
Quality and quantity here. You don’t score more for kicking it beautifully, but Pendlebury finds space and often racks up huge numbers.
Jack Redden (Brisbane Lions) $531,100
The real stuff starts now, but Redden and co. look set for a huge season after a perfect NAB Cup series.
Bradley Hill (Hawthorn) $191,700
Looks set to finally cement a spot in the senior side after some dazzling efforts in the NAB Cup. Very cheap and looks a must.
Lachie Whitfield (Greater Western Sydney) $183,700
There’s no substitute for quality, and Whitfield has bucket loads of it. Prolific young ball-winner fulfilling his destiny.
Brad Crouch (Adelaide) $108,500
Youngster with senior experience in the SANFL last season. Had a solid NAB Cup series and is too cheap to pass up.
Jaeger O’Meara (Gold Coast) $108,500
Super talented star rearing to go for his debut AFL season. Too cheap considering his skill, speed and endurance.
Bench: Kane Mitchell (Port) and Jack Viney (Melbourne)
Rucks
Dean Cox (West Coast) $512,400
Has been a brilliant ruck choice within DT circles for years now and seems to be fighting fit. Easy selection.
Sam Jacobs (Adelaide) $449,900
Averaged close to 90 last season and is now rated as one of the AFL’s premier ruckmen. Price is fair.
Bench: Majak Daw (North Melbourne) and Daniel Currie (North Melbourne)
Forwards
Lance Franklin (Hawthorn) $521,300
Freakish forward who not only scores bags of goals but also racks up a high disposal count for a power forward. A lock.
Tom Rockliff (Brisbane Lions) $481,700
His team’s in a good spot at the moment and this guy is a perfect DT forward selection as he roams through the midfield winning lots of footy.
Mark LeCras (West Coast) $355,400
Returning from a knee but is a silky player who is great in front of goals. Seems to be fit and firing. Worth the risk.
Jake Stringer (Western Bulldogs) $165,700
Looked very solid in the NAB Cup series before hurting an ankle, but I am willing to take the punt on him after positive scans recently.
Joe Daniher (Essendon) $143,200
Can’t wait to see if Daniher lives up to the already much-publicised hype surrounding him. Should get senior opportunities.
Brent Macaffer (Collingwood) $132,600
Another returning from injury in season 2013. Don’t expect monster scores but his price will rise and can average around 70.
Bench: Tom Lee (St Kilda) and Ben Kennedy (Collingwood)
