The AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has reviewed the weekend’s matches. The following charges were laid:
Charges Laid:
Jonathan Brown, Brisbane Lions, has been charged with a Level Three striking offence (225 demerit points, two-match sanction) for striking Michael Jamison, Carlton, during the third quarter of the Round Nine match between the Brisbane Lions and Carlton, played at the Gabba on Saturday May 25, 2013.
In summary, he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea.
Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Carlton Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Three offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 168.75 points and a one-match sanction.
Shane Edwards, Richmond, has been charged with a Level One misconduct offence ($2600) for misconduct in that he pushed Dyson Heppell, Essendon, into the path of umpire Chris Donlon during the second quarter of the Round Nine match between Richmond and Essendon, played at the MCG on Saturday May 25, 2013.
In summary, he can accept a $1950 sanction with an early plea.
A first offence for misconduct is a $2600 sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a $1950 sanction.
Jack Ziebell, North Melbourne, has been charged with a Level Two engaging in rough conduct offence (225 demerit points, two-match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Jarryd Lyons, Adelaide Crows, during the second quarter of the Round Nine match between North Melbourne and the Adelaide Crows, played at Etihad Stadium on Sunday May 26, 2013.
In summary, due to his previous poor record, his two-mach sanction is increased to a three-match penalty, even with an early plea.
Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Adelaide Crows Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and high contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of seven matches suspended within the last two years, increasing the penalty by 50 per cent to 337.50 points and a three-match sanction. He also has 67.50 points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 405 points and a four-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 303.75 points and a three-match sanction.
Other Incidents Assessed:
The match day report against Fremantle’s Alex Silvagni for engaging in rough conduct against Melbourne’s Nathan Jones was assessed. The panel said Jones had won the ball after a centre bounce and was immediately tackled by Fremantle’s David Mundy. Silvagni was coming from the opposite direction towards the contest as Jones was attempting to break Mundy’s tackle, and the Fremantle player made high contact as he also tried to tackle the Melbourne player. After speaking to the umpire who laid the report and viewing all available footage, it was the view of the panel that Silvagni’s action was a legitimate attempt to tackle and the subsequent high contact was accidental. No further action was taken.
Contact between Collingwood’s Darren Jolly and the Sydney Swans’ Ben McGlynn from the third quarter of Friday’s match was assessed. Sydney’s Jude Bolton had the ball and McGlynn was seeking to run into space in the forward line. Jolly attempted to block the run of the Sydney player and made high contact, for which a free kick was paid against him. After speaking to the umpire who paid the free, viewing all available footage and receiving a medical report from the Sydney Swans, it was the view of the panel the force used was below that required to constitute a reportable offence.
