THE SYDNEY Swans could have some tough selection decisions to make for Saturday night's semi-final against Carlton with Jarrad McVeigh and Jude Bolton no certainties to be available, leading sports medico Dr Peter Larkins says.
McVeigh twisted his right knee when he was tackled by Hawthorn's Brad Hill in the dying stages of Friday night's qualifying final loss at the MCG.
He is also carrying a left calf injury.
Bolton corked his quad just above his knee in the last quarter.
While the Swans are optimistic about the fitness of their list - with coach John Longmire saying on Monday they were "fortunate to get out of the game with everyone getting a clean bill of health" - the experienced duo remains firmly in doubt.
"McVeigh and Bolton are certainly not givens to come up for Saturday, particularly McVeigh," Larkins told AFL.com.au on Monday.
"McVeigh is more sore and he sprained the outside of his knee when he fell awkwardly and flexed it.
"He's got a sprain in the fibula joint, which is the big joint on the side of the knee.
"[Bolton] has got a badly corked quad just above his knee and he was quite sore at the end.
"He got heavily jarred and corked just right above the tendon in the front of his knee, and the problem is that causes swelling to go into your knee.
"There's no ligament structural damage to his knee but he'll really need to be treated today and tomorrow and Wednesday."
Neither player completed the warm down on Friday night as they were busy icing their injuries, and Longmire said McVeigh had since "pulled up pretty well" from.
Larkins said both would have very light weeks on the track ahead of the do-or-die final at ANZ Stadium.
He also said McVeigh could probably play with strapping and support on his knee.
The Swans could also have to make a call on Gary Rohan, who played his fourth game back from a sickening broken leg on Friday night, and whether Adam Goodes returns from the knee injury that's kept him out since round 13.
Larkins said Rohan was "really struggling" with soreness in his shin and calf as a consequence of the serious leg injury, which was sustained in round four, 2012.
"Whilst [Rohan's] got back to being selected to play, he's actually struggling a little bit with a lot of calf soreness and I thought he was limping noticeably in the second half of the game on Friday night," he said.
"Depending on how sore he is, there might be spots for Goodes, if Rohan or Bolton aren't selected."
Longmire said Goodes had trained well on Sunday and the Swans were yet to make a decision on his availability.
"He sat in my office and said he feels well," Longmire said.
"Whether we play him or not, we don't know yet.
"He's going to train the rest of the week, we're certainly mindful of what he has and hasn't done and he hasn't done a lot of training and hasn't played for a long time.
"We also know he's a pretty special player and a pretty special and mentally tough player and person."
Larkins said he didn't expect Goodes' knee to restrict him, with the decision likely to come down to match fitness rather than the injury itself.
"He probably won't be limited, provided he hasn't got the soreness from training; it's fitness and match conditioning," he said.
"The limitation is when you're sore and that's where he's been over the last eight weeks from the arthroscope surgery and the amount of joint surface damage.
"It's easy to jar or stir up the knee in a contest but if he comes into the game, he'll come in not sore and not limited."
Larkins said he didn't expect Carlton ruckman Matthew Kreuzer to miss the game with the right mid-foot problem he picked up in Sunday's win over Richmond at the MCG.
Kreuzer was treated in the first and second quarters but was able to finish the game.
However, he said Brock McLean could be in danger of missing another week with the quad strain that ruled him out in the last stages of the warm-up on Sunday.
"I think it's a bad sign that he had a reactivation of his right quad, which is his kicking leg," he said.
"He'd only missed one game really and I was surprised he was picked.
"McLean would be most unlikely to be coming back."
