FAST-FINISHING Geelong skipper Joel Selwood has leapt to second place in the AFL Coaches Association's champion player award after yet another best-afield performance.
In the Cats' big win over West Coast, Selwood scored his sixth perfect 10 of the season – a competition high – to claw past former teammate Gary Ablett and move to within just two votes of Sydney Swans co-captain Kieren Jack.
In a career-best purple patch during the past seven rounds, Selwood has polled coaches' votes six times and amassed 52 votes.
In that period he has averaged 28.3 disposals and tallied 15 goals, including career-best hauls of four in his past two outings.
With just two rounds remaining, seven players are still in contention to win the award – Jack, Selwood, Ablett, Scott Pendlebury, Dane Swan, Ryan Griffen and Dan Hannebery.
Swan and Griffen were the only others in this exclusive group to poll votes in round 21.
Griffen's consistency has been remarkable. He has earned votes in 13 of his past 14 games, averaging 32.2 possessions (including 14.1 contested) in the process.
Port Adelaide skipper Travis Boak rose to eighth position after receiving maximum votes in his side's win over Gold Coast.
Carlton's rough diamonds Brock McLean and Mitch Robinson were deemed the two most impressive players in the Blues' crucial win over Richmond.
