DESPITE spending the bulk of his junior career up forward and in the midfield, Port Adelaide draftee Jarman Impey has no qualms about potentially spending more time in defence.
Impey averaged 18 disposals and nearly a goal a game for the Murray Bushrangers this season but was drafted to the Power as a "small defender with some speed and aggression", according to Port Adelaide recruiting manager Geoff Parker.
The 18-year-old joined the Power's other draftees, Darcy Byrne-Jones and Karl Amon, at Alberton Oval on Tuesday and said he was at his best in the backline.
"This year I played a bit in defence and was really happy with it. I reckon I played my best footy [back there]," Impey said.
"A bit of run, a bit of creating the play, running the lines and hitting up a target or two.
"I think I can play various positions… in the (Under-18s) carnival for Vic Country I played a bit in the middle, the backline and also up forward."
The Power's four draftees (including Mitch Harvey who joined the club with pick No. 45) will fly to Dubai on Tuesday night to meet up with the rest of the squad, who left Adelaide for the Middle Eastern city on Sunday night.
Impey said it would be an imposing way to first meet the playing group.
"We're going to have to go over there and show our faces and introduce ourselves in front of all the boys, so it'll be a bit daunting," he said.
"[I'm] definitely looking forward to the challenge, it's for the best."
Once settled, Impey said he wanted to make his AFL debut in 2014, while Amon was more circumspect, saying he simply wanted to learn as much as possible in his first season.
Byrne-Jones is keen to bulk up before pressing for a senior debut.
Impey's favourite player at Alberton is livewire forward Jake Neade while Amon says he is a fan of Oliver Wines.
Byrne-Jones' opinion has been swayed by his friends.
"All my mates back at home love the 'Hoff' (Justin Westhoff) so I'd have to go with him as my favourite," he said.
