The goal umpire signalled Jordan Lewis' shot was all clear for Hawthorn in the final term of the impressive win over the Sydney Swans.
But after several minutes of umpires conferring and a review of the video footage, it was ruled that Swans defender Dane Rampe had touched the ball on the line.
Restless Hawks fans became furious, with players also looking confused.
The incident was a concern, admitted new AFL football operations manager Mark Evans.
"I have some concerns for the total time taken in that assessment," Evans told AAP.
"I also would like to know a lot more about the processes there, as to why the goal umpire's original decision was altered.
"I need to understand that a bit better."
Evans said the AFL umpiring department would review the incident.
"I will wait for their assessment as to what's happened there and how we can make it a bit better," he added.
Evans was Hawthorn football manager before joining the AFL and Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson said the goal should have been allowed to stand.
"The benefit of the doubt has to go to the batsman, doesn't it?" Clarkson said.
"My old buddy Mark Evans will be under a bit of heat - a bit of controversy for a couple of days.
"Hopefully they'll get it right next time."
There has been near-weekly criticism of the video review system this season, with the League admitting it is imperfect.
Even though there was goal-line footage of the Rampe incident, it was not clear whether he had touched the ball before it went through.
