THE FAN experience at the MCG will be taken to a whole new level after the largest scoreboards in the country were installed at the ground.
The state-of-the-art high definition screens, at both the Punt Road and city ends of the ground, are more than three times the size of the old ones.
In a race to be ready for cricket season, the screens have been imported from the United States by air and ship.
Work on the $5 million project began after the 2013 AFL Grand Final.
"It is interesting to compare, the very first board that went into the MCG I think cost $6 million for one, a very clunky one compared to the two we're looking at today," MCC chief executive Stephen Gough said.
The upgrade keeps the MCG at the forefront of Australian stadiums at a time when the Adelaide Oval and SCG have been undergoing major facelifts.
Etihad Stadium is also upgrading to high definition scoreboards which will be one third larger than previously.
"Part of the reason of being a large stadium is you've got to have the best and the largest and I think that's what we've got," Gough said.
"What you're seeing is a perfect example of reinvesting in the best, we now have the largest screens in Australia, we have a clarity that is unparalleled."
The MCG screens are 25.24m wide and 13.17m high equalling approximately 332 square metres.
AFL fans will enjoy the new displays for the first time when Carlton plays Richmond on Thursday, March 27.
