MELBOURNE has re-signed Simon Goodwin on the eve of the 2019 season, with a fresh new three-year contract extension signalling the club's commitment to him as the man to lead the Demons to a drought-breaking flag.
The new deal will see Goodwin at the helm until at least the end of the 2022 season, committing him to the key job of bringing sustained on-field success during that period.
Goodwin was originally contracted until the end of 2019, but the extension, which has been in the pipeline for months, was officially ratified by the Melbourne board on Monday night.

CEO Gary Pert said the extension was confirmation Goodwin was the right man to take the club to a premiership in the coming years.
"It's great for the club to announce, prior to the season starting, that Simon Goodwin has signed on for the next four years," Pert told the club's website.
"It is certainly a show of confidence from the board, (football manager) Josh Mahoney and myself in Simon as a coach and what he is producing out on field, but also the culture that he is building in our football department.
"This is the board signing off that these are the people, this is the leadership, this is the program and this is the culture that we believe will take the Melbourne Football Club to where we want to go over the next four years. It’s an investment in those people and the program, so that makes it pretty exciting."
Chairman Glen Bartlett said Goodwin was the ideal candidate to lead the Demons' journey.
"He lives and breathes our standards, behaviours and values, which has a ripple effect through the entire football department," Bartlett said.
Goodwin, who coached Melbourne to a preliminary final and its first finals campaign in 12 years in 2018, first joined the Demons in 2015 in a handover arrangement with then coach Paul Roos.
He was appointed a senior assistant under the guidance of Roos, before beginning his tenure as senior coach in 2017.
Melbourne heads into the 2019 season as a premiership contender, with the club undergoing a significant rebuild in its pursuit of its first piece of silverware since 1964.
