Pies hand important jumper number to draftee Matthew Scharenberg
THE NO. 35 guernsey holds a special significance at Collingwood and the club's first draft pick Matthew Scharenberg will carry on its famous tradition next season.
Jumper No.35 has taken on increased significance after ex-Pies defender Simon Prestigiacomo selflessly declared himself unfit to take the field in the 2010 Grand Final.
His decision prompted the Magpies to begin a tradition of attaching extra significance to the number.
As former coach Mick Malthouse put it, "that player will hold that jumper for 12 months and understand the history of it and the responsibility of teamsmanship and professionalism displayed by Simon".
The previous owner of the No. 35 jumper, Brodie Grundy, will wear Alan Didak's old No.4 next season.
The club's second pick (No.10 overall) at last week's NAB AFL Draft, Nathan Freeman, has taken over Heath Shaw's former No.39 jumper.
Fellow draftees Tom Langdon and Jonathan Marsh will wear No.41 and No.46 respectively.
Sam Dwyer (No.2), Ben Kennedy (No.7) and Marley Williams (No.26) are the notable players to have made a switch in numbers for next season.
