JEREMY McGovern is expected to return next week despite injuring his right ankle in West Coast's scratch match against Brisbane on Saturday morning.

Suspended from AFL action after striking Gold Coast's Alex Sexton last week, the four-time All-Australian joined the Eagles in the clash against the Lions reserves.

Early in the third of four 10-minute quarters, McGovern went down and limped from the field alongside trainers.

He failed to return to the field but was later spotted walking unassisted.

But coach Adam Simpson allayed any fears after the Eagles' loss to Brisbane, saying the star defender rolled his ankle and it was of the 'garden variety'.

"We are hoping his going to be fine this week, so we'll see how he pulls up in the next few days," Simpson said.

The defender was been replaced in the Eagles line-up by premiership teammate Will Schofield.
