TEAM-OF-THE-MOMENT Gold Coast will assign multiple players to the mighty task of stopping Fremantle champion Nat Fyfe on Saturday night.

The dual Brownlow medallist remains in imperious form despite the Dockers being without a win through three rounds, although his defensive accountability is again a talking point.

Suns coach Stuart Dew, whose side has recorded consecutive thumping victories, has prepared thoroughly for the meeting with "one of the best players in the competition".

"Got any ideas?" Dew joked.

"We'll have a couple of options. We'll certainly have some players there we think can handle him in different situations.

"But the trick with Nathan is he can go forward and mark it, and generally the players who can play on him in the midfield aren't as good down back in that scenario, so it's going to take a couple of guys in different areas to monitor his strengths."

As for being able to expose Fyfe defensively, Dew wasn't buying into the commentary.

 "I think he gets highlighted unfairly in that space, because he's such a weapon for the team when they're going and he can turn momentum in a game when they're not," he said.

"I'm definitely not a subscriber of going out and deliberately trying to target him the other way, because we might be barking up the wrong tree."

Gold Coast is close to full strength but important defender Rory Thompson's recovery from a left knee reconstruction has taken an unexpected turn.

The 29-year-old's surgically repaired knee is in "really good shape" but his other one continues to play up and Dew confirmed he was set for more time on the sidelines.

"He pulled up a bit sore the other day, so the next couple of days we'll hold him back a bit and investigate what's happening there," the coach said.

"We're just trying to get back to that return-to-play (stage) and he's hit a little bit of a hurdle. We don't expect it to be anything really bad but it looks like he'll miss a bit of footy.

"This one is more an ongoing thing we've been monitoring and it's just got to the point we think, 'Let's find out exactly what's happening'."

Prized 2018 draftee Izak Rankine is fit and played some competitive match simulation last week but the Suns don't plan to rush him into the side.

In fact, Dew hinted there may be no changes from last week's demolition of Adelaide.

"Most teams would ideally go in unchanged based on the previous performance, and we'd love to go in unchanged," he said.

"The more times we can, the better it is. But also we do want to, at some point, reward people from underneath."
