PORT Adelaide's prized top draft pick Hamish Hartlett has already achieved his pre-season goal of securing a NAB Cup debut, but he says he’s not setting his sights any higher just yet.
Hartlett, the No.4 pick overall in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft, was eased into full training over the summer after undergoing a shoulder reconstruction in September and was rested from the family day hit-out with SANFL clubs Sturt and the Port Adelaide Magpies.
But the 18-year-old showed he was more than ready to play against the Swans in Canberra on Sunday with an impressive performance at training on Wednesday.
Hartlett said selection was just reward for his first-ever full pre-season.
“It was certainly a goal to get in the side for round one of the NAB Cup and I’ve achieved it, so I’m pretty happy,” he said on Friday.
“I was just so excited when I found out (I was playing) this morning. Putting the guernsey on for the first time, training this morning and looking at yourself in the mirror…you think I could get used to this.
Hartlett, who has already been touted as a future leader, began training with the main group shortly after arriving at Alberton, but had to be held back by the club’s medical staff, who decided to take an extra cautious approach to his rehabilitation.
“The initial date (for my return to footy) was set for six months, but five months had gone and I thought, personally, that I was ahead of schedule,” Hartlett said.
“I felt really good and was itching to get out there and get amongst the boys in the tackling and those sorts of drills, but I was getting held back, which was probably a good thing in the end.
“I think it’s all gone to plan. My left shoulder is almost as strong as my right and it’s never been that strong before.”
The keen teenager has showcased his impeccable skills at both ends of the ground this pre-season, as well as on the wing.
His teammates have earmarked him for big things in 2009, but Hartlett said he was focussed on just getting a touch against the Swans this week.
“Just to get my first touch of the ball will be a huge thrill," he said.
"I’ve been watching a few of the other first-round draft picks out there over the past couple of weeks and I’m not expecting to set the world alight.
“We’ve got a pretty strong side on paper. I’ll see how I go over the next month and if my form is any good there, hopefully, I can crack a game [in round one], but it’s not on the agenda at this stage.”
The Power have named a strong side to tackle the Swans with Shaun Burgoyne (hamstring), Robbie Gray, Michael Pettigrew and recent first-time dads David Rodan and Steve Salopek the most noticeable absentees.
The 29-man-squad, which will be cut to 26, also includes recycled onballers Jason Davenport and Danny Meyer and electrifying rookie Wade Thompson.
Dream Team watch: Hamish Hartlett is rated as a $138,600 midfielder in the Toyota AFL Dream Team 2009.
