SYDNEY SWANS coach Paul Roos was in a jovial mood when discussing contracted player Nick Davis and the interview he gave this week where he admitted he would like to play for the West Coast Eagles.
Roos admitted that he was somewhat perplexed by the article but gave Davis the benefit of the doubt that not everything he said appeared in full.
"I don't know, I haven't read the full article," Roos said in response to questions about Davis looking to play elsewhere in 2009.
"I don't know what the question was as to why you would answer it like that. Sometimes you don't read the full article in the media. I didn't even know he was a West Coast supporter," he said laughing.
The 28-year-old Davis is out of contract at the end of 2008 and won't play again this year after suffering a knee injury that requires surgery.
Davis told The Age newspaper this week that while his best case scenario would be to remain with Sydney he would look elsewhere and playing at the Eagles would definitely be a challenge.
"I'd definitely love to play with them," Davis said. "I barracked for the Eagles as a kid, they're a great club, a very professional club and looking at them as an opponent in recent times, they've probably struggled a little bit in the forward line."
Roos attributed the comments to Davis' agent, Lance Thompson, being primarily a rugby league agent where players shop themselves around constantly.
"Rugby League is very different and I think with Lance he is still coming to terms with how AFL footy is," Roos said. "Every week in NRL you see players signing with other clubs when they are still playing with another.
"That is probably the difference with Nick. It is a different way of doing things. It is unusual but I have been in footy long enough to think that maybe the unusual is becoming the usual."
Roos said no decision had been made on any player coming or leaving the club.
"At this stage of the year I don' think about who is going to be here and who is not going to be here," he said.
"It is a pretty important time for us as a footy club and what he wants to do and what his manager wants to do I can't really control."
He also commented that he had no idea if a rival club would be interested in Davis' services.
"I don't know whether clubs would be or wouldn't be interested because I haven't really rung around to find out," he said.
