The Carlton Football Club is pleased to confirm that Jason McCartney and Brett Montgomery have joined the Club’s coaching panel. McCartney has accepted the role as Development Coach and Montgomery will be a full-time Assistant Coach.
“We are thrilled to secure the services of Jason and Brett,” General Manager Football Operations, Steven Icke said.
McCartney began his career at Collingwood, playing 38 games before switching to Adelaide in 1995 where he played 37 games. In 1998 he retuned to Victoria and played a further 107 games for the Kangaroos.
Following his retirement, McCartney has served as an assistant coach at the AFL-Australian Institute of Sport, as well as an AFL development coach.
“Jason has been heavily involved with the AIS development program over the last few years and his appointment to the role of development coach will be an enormous benefit to our young, emerging list,” Icke said.
Montgomery made his AFL debut at the Western Bulldogs in 1997, beginning his career at the relatively late age of 23. After three seasons at the Bulldogs, Montgomery was traded to Port Adelaide, where he won the 2000 Best & Fairest in his first season. He won All-Australian selection in 2002, and was a member of 2004 Premiership team. Montgomery returned to the Bulldogs in 2006, before announcing his retirement in 2007.
“In discussions with Brett he has displayed an outstanding knowledge of the game and having only recently retired as a player he will provide a different perspective to our coaching team play a vital role in the continued development of our team,” said Steven Icke.
The two new members of the Carlton coaching panel will commence their roles with the club in early November.
