The Carlton player leadership group has elected Kade Simpson to captain Carlton in this Sunday’s match against Melbourne at the MCG. Denis Pagan announced the decision to the playing group prior to training at MC Labour Park on Wednesday morning.

Simpson was obviously delighted to have the opportunity to captain Carlton for the match. “It is a great honour. I am absolutely thrilled to be considered to be the stand in captain for Sunday’s game and proud that my peers have elected me to lead the team. While it is exciting the most important thing is to be a part of a winning Carlton team against Melbourne,” Simpson said after training.

Kade has played 56 AFL games since making his debut in round 11, 2003 and his development in the last 12 months was recognised at the end of the 2006 season when he was selected to tour Ireland in the Australia’s International Rules Team. An AFL Rising Star nominee in 2003, Simpson was a member of Carlton’s 2005 and 2007 pre-season premiership teams.

Last week it was decided a rotating captain policy would be implemented until Club Captain Lance Whitnall returns to the side. Jarrad Waite was elected to lead the team in Perth last Saturday and should Lance Whitnall not play in round 15 another member of the leadership group will be elected to captain Carlton in Sydney. Both Jarrad and Kade will not be considered as part of the rotation of the role until Whitnall returns.
