Richmond’s stunning upset victory over second-placed Hawthorn at the MCG last Sunday was all the meritorious given the difference between the two teams in the inside-50 entry numbers on the day.
The Tigers had just 36 entries inside their forward 50 area, which was the equal fourth lowest total of any team in the competition this season. Hawthorn, in comparison, had 49 entries.
Despite this, however, Richmond was able to score 25 times from its 36 entries and conjure an impressive 29-point victory – 16.9 (105) to 10.16 (76).
There have been 27 occasions this season where teams have had less than 40 inside-50 entries in a game. Of those 27, just three have resulted in wins – Richmond last Sunday against Hawthorn, St Kilda (36) against Fremantle (40) in Round 13, and Port Adelaide (38) against Fremantle (51) in Round 10.
Interestingly, Richmond’s lowest inside-50 total for the ’08 season was in the Round 6 clash with Hawthorn at the MCG. On that occasion, the Tigers had 33 inside-50 entries, which was 24 less than the Hawks’ 57, but were beaten by only 12 points.
