With both Lenny Hayes and Michael Gardiner training with the full squad today, Sam Fisher is expected to be the only big name not up for selection this afternoon. New faces Ben McEvoy and David Armitage are also likely to be considered for the team that will travel to Sydney.
“We’ve still got an intense session to go, and we’ll gather ourselves and name the squad to finalise it;” Lyon explained before this afternoon’s training session.
But Lyon has admitted he is not expecting Sydney coach Paul Roos to have shown all his cards during the NAB Cup Round 2 clash, saying some recent changes at the Swans will provide a tough match for the Saints.
“What we know is the Swans compete and they give effort, which is what we ask of our group.”
“There’s a fair bit coming out of the Sydney camp, with their recruits and their different style of footy, so it’s really red alert for us.”
With the pre-season now over, it is going to be a great test for Lyon and the team to prove they are ready to once again show the rest of the competition what Saints Footy is about.
“We’re a proud football team and Club and we want to try to win every game to get the momentum started. It has been a long hot summer, but, besides Sam Fisher, we are coming in fit and available.”
“We’re going to control our effort, prepare and pursue excellence in our preparation to see where that takes us, because we know it’s going to give us the best opportunity.”
Needless to say, fans can come into 2010 assured that Ross and the boys will be bringing back last year’s inspiring brand of footy.
