The story below was entered by Magpie supporter Ben Singer, who described his feelings in the 24 hours after the drawn grand final.

I didn’t know what to do.  I felt lost.  Scared.  Shocked.

How could this happen?

I hated myself for planning my post match celebrations during the third term.  Was it my fault?

That night I went home to mum and dad’s place.  We didn’t say much.  Dad was muttering about missed chances.  Mum was trying to remain positive.

I was still shot.

Sunday rolled around and I forced myself out of bed.

Didn’t buy a paper.  What was the point?  I knew what happened.  I was there.

Caught up with a few likeminded mates for coffee to discuss our plan of action.  Two of the guys hadn’t slept the night before.  My other friend was dressed in black, thought it was the right thing to do.

On our second latte we went through the tape.  Mentally of course.

What if there was extra time?  What if Milne ran on to it?  What if Maxy didn’t make it?

Too many uncertainties.

Another round of caffeine and it started kicking in.

My mate wearing black spoke of the midfield.  Pendles, Swan and Ball all well down on their season averages.

Dawes and Browny held goalless.  Didak lacked flair.

We weren’t ourselves yet we had built a sizable lead before we lost it.

We knew how to beat this side.  We could do this.

My boys who hadn’t slept wanted to go to bed.  They said they needed to rest for the big week ahead.

My friend in black discarded his hoodie, and underneath still had his Magpie jumper on.

I went back to mum and dads.  Dad was already sourcing tickets for next week.  He wanted to be there because he knew we would do it.

It took less than 24 hours for my feelings to subside.

Bring it on.

Bought the Herald Sun on the way home.   Read the thing back to front before I called it a night.
