OVER time, Jobe Watson has transformed himself into a complete midfielder capable of turning a game in Essendon's favour in many ways.
In this week's The Whiteboard video segment, AFL.com.au's Matthew Richardson analyses Watson's 30-disposal and two-goal performance against Richmond in round eight using exclusive iso-camera footage.
Richardson says Watson's height (190cm) has been crucial to his development as a modern midfielder, and explains how the two-time best and fairest winner has improved his 'outside' game to match it with the most damaging players in the competition.
"Early in Jobe's career he had it a bit out of whack with his rate of possession," Richardson says.
"He was winning most of his football on the inside and there were queries about his run and spread.
"But there's no doubt over the years he has worked really hard on his speed and endurance, and that is now allowing him to get on the outside and win a lot of football."
Watson is in his third season as Bombers captain since taking over from champion forward Matthew Lloyd in 2010, and Richardson highlights his leadership as integral to Essendon's improvement.
In particular, Richardson shows footage of Watson supporting teammate Jake Melksham after a skill error resulted in Richmond having a shot at goal.
"I love to see your captain doing that out on the ground," Richardson says.
