AFL UMPIRING manager Jeff Gieschen says a free kick should have been paid against Collingwood skipper Nick Maxwell for a deliberate rushed behind during the Magpies' big win over West Coast at the MCG on Sunday.

In the 15th minute of the second quarter, Maxwell crumbed the ball off a marking contest then turned and kicked it through the opposition goals.

A behind was added to the Eagles' score and Collingwood was allowed to kick the ball back into play.

But West Coast should have been handed a shot at goal from close range instead.

"Maxwell had opposition players in the vicinity but he wasn’t under immediate pressure," Gieschen said.

"Nick’s sole intention in this situation after he had taken clean possession was to put the ball through for a score to the opposition.

"We instruct umpires that a player needs to be under immediate pressure to be allowed to concede a behind."
