Eastlake kicked the first goals of the game but the Swans replied with a goal from top-up player Kieran Emery after a mark 20 metres out and a Dylan McNeil goal on the run from 50 metres.
At the 14 minute mark Eastlake kicked their third but the Swans replied again, this time with three goals in 10 minutes. Patrick Veszpremi marked and goaled from 55 metres, Ed Barlow took a strong mark 40 metres from goal and kicked truly and Matthew O’Dwyer kicked one from 15 metres as a result of some good ruck work.
At the first break the Swans led by three points after Eastlake added another two goals.
Daniel Currie opened the scoring in the second half with a goal after a scramble in the square. Six minutes in Eastlake kicked their sixth goal for the game but Currie kicked his second a few minutes later after a mark 30 metres out. After Eastlake kicked their seventh, Paul Bevan joined the goal kickers and Barlow kicked his second on the run from 50 metres.
Eastlake goaled once more for the quarter to bring the Swans’ lead to nine points at half time.
Despite losing Barlow at the break as he was the emergency for the seniors, the third term was a shootout with the Swans kicking seven goals to Eastlake’s six.
Lewis Johnston goaled after running 50 metres out of defence and kicking from 50 metres out and Emery kicked his second from a mark 20 metres from goal. O’Dwyer kicked one on the run from 50 metres after the centre clearance and after Eastlake goaled for the second time in the quarter, Emery goaled again after a good mark.
Eastlake then kicked two in a row before Henry Playfair took a diving mark and kicked his first and O’Dwyer added his third to put the Swans four goals ahead. The margin at three quarter time was 17 points after Eastlake kicked the last two goals of the term.
In the final quarter Eastlake closed the gap with two goals in the first six minutes. Gary Rohan, who had been playing in the backline, moved forward and had an immediate impact kicking two goals in three minutes, both from a lead and a mark. Although Eastlake goaled once more it as not enough to catch the Swans.
Mike Pyke was fantastic in the ruck and was named best player while Rohan was second best after his work in defence and attack. Midfielders McNeil and O’Dwyer were again named in the best, while Bevan, who played forward, and Sam Reid, who was at fullback, were also in good form.
Next Saturday, May 8, the Swans Reserves play Tuggeranong at Greenway Oval at 2pm.
