THE ODDS of Mark Thompson walking away from his coaching position at Geelong have shortened dramatically after the Cats boss made an emotional speech at the club’s best-and-fairest dinner.

Thompson, who has coached Geelong for 11 seasons, recently told Cats administrators that he is considering stepping down from his position due to exhaustion.

As a result, he has been given until Tuesday to decide if he wishes to continue in the role.

Despite having been strongly linked with a position on James Hird’s revamped coaching panel at Essendon, Thompson was warmly received when he began addressing the Geelong supporters at Thursday night’s function in Melbourne.

“Tonight seems like a very funny sort of a night for the club,” the dual premiership coach said.

“It started off a bit funny, but I think this football club is in an incredible position and I’m very optimistic about its future.

“It’s not built around individuals and this club has just got some unbelievable people that work there.

“Our club has just got quality people everywhere.

“The Geelong Football Club has a long history of fighting on and boxing on and taking opportunities and looking forward to challenges and that’s what we have to do.

“We have to just get on with the business. This footy club will be fine for a very long period of time.”

But the crowd fell quiet as Thompson appeared to indicate his time with the Cats is over.

“I’d just like to thank a massive thank you to all the people who help get the players on the field,” he said.

“I’ve loved working here. I love all the players and all the people we work with.

“I love my partner. She keeps me up. That’s all good.”
