THE SEARCH for Melbourne's next captain has been narrowed to six candidates.

Jack Grimes and Nathan Jones have joined Brad Green, Aaron Davey, Jared Rivers and Brent Moloney in the club's leadership group for 2011.

Last year's captain James McDonald retired at season's end while fellow leadership group members Cameron Bruce and Brad Miller joined Hawthorn and Richmond respectively.

At 21, Grimes is the youngest member of the leadership group, which was voted on by his peers.

"You never really know what the rest of the playing group thinks of you, so it’s good to be seen that way by the rest of the playing group," Grimes said on melbournefc.com.au.

"I hoped other people would see me as a leader ... so to see that many votes off the playing group tells me that I must be going about things the right way and the peers see me that way.

Grimes has played just 26 senior games in an injury-affected three years but showed patches of good form in 2010 and has long been recognised for his leadership abilities.

Jones said he was thrilled to hear he was voted into the leadership group.

"I was pretty happy when I found out. I’ve put a bit of work into it over the past couple of years," Jones said.

"I’ve really tried to build some good relationships and set the right example, so it was a bit of a reward for hard work.

"Now there is a little bit more expectation placed on me."
