INJURED Sydney Swans Dan Hannebery and Gary Rohan both trained on Wednesday and continue to firm as starters for Friday night's semi-final against Hawthorn at the MCG.

Hannebery (shoulder) and Rohan (knee) took part in light duties before the media were shuffled out for the closed training session.

Both need to get through training and pull up well on Thursday, but Swans coach John Longmire expects the two important youngsters to do just that.

"They need to be pretty good," Longmire said when asked if they needed to be 100 per cent fit.

"You're going into a final, you want to make sure you're taking fit players into a final.

"Both are pretty tough kids and they'll both be pretty keen to play, but we need to make good decisions.

"At this stage we'd probably be leaning towards them playing because we expect them to train and pull up OK."

It appears increasingly unlikely, however, that Hawthorn superstar Buddy Franklin (knee) will be fit to face the Swans.

But the Swans aren't taking any chances.

"We prepare for scenarios involving Buddy and not involving Buddy," Longmire said.

"Obviously he's been a big part of their forward set-up for the entire year.

"But even when he's been out of the team they've been averaging over 18 goals a game in the three games they've won with him out."

Longmire's response drew a big laugh from the media contingent when he was asked which scenario he would prefer.

"Well, he's a good player," he said.

"I understand the public wanting to watch Buddy at his finest, but opposition coaches don't get that much of a thrill out of it."

Cyril Rioli, who has been below his best of late, still looms as Hawthorn's most dangerous forward if Franklin is ruled out.

Nick Smith is a likely match-up, with the unheralded Swan performing extremely well on small forwards in recent weeks.

Smith might be enjoying a surge in confidence, but he will still need to be well on his game if he lines up on Rioli, Longmire said.

"I'm not sure whether you can stride confidently up to Cyril. He's a gun player," Longmire said.

"I think Nick Smith [is an option], Rhyce Shaw actually played on him here last time we played as well.

"We've got a couple of options that could go to him."

Heath Grundy was spotted on the training track on Wednesday, but Longmire said he won't be ready this week as he continues to recover from glandular fever.

The Swans fly to Melbourne on Thursday and will have a light training run at the MCG that afternoon.

They have a poor recent record at the ground, with one win and a draw from their past 13 games at the MCG, but the Swans have already broken some hoodoos this year.

"It's just being confident that what we've been doing over the last month hopefully stands up anywhere," Longmire said.

"Whether it's Geelong at Geelong or Etihad on a Saturday night or the MCG, nothing really changes in regards to what we have to do."
