GEELONG coach Mark Thompson says his team didn't deserve to win its epic struggle with Fremantle at Subiaco on Friday night.

A burst of sheer brilliance that produced six goals in ten minutes in time-on in the second quarter, and a grinding, gutsy 20 minutes in the last that produced five unanswered majors got the visitors over the line by a point.

But Thompson said Fremantle played the better footy over the whole of the night.

"We probably didn't deserve to win, but we end up going away with the four points," he said after the match.

"Fremantle were absolutely fantastic, they threw everything at us, and we were just a little bit off. We had two fantastic quarters where the game opened up and we scored easy goals, which we've shown an ability to do, and we're very very proud of the fact that we've got away with the points."

Thompson said the team's self-belief was the thing that got it home.

"There was a whole host of people who were pretty brave, and I know they had a few soldiers down, but we had a couple who were just really sick in the belly, and we had Tom [Harley, buttock strain] who couldn't play the rest of the game, so it was a bit of a battle to get to the line.

"I think our boys really coached well – the assistant coaches – and obviously the players played terrifically well.

"I think there's a deep-down belief and a will – a belief that they have the ability to do it, and a will and the desire to come over here and win the game.

"They like winning."
