KURT Tippett's announcement that the Sydney Swans is his preferred new home for 2013 has rocked the footy world and thrown open the 2012 Gillette AFL Trade Period.

Tippett announced on Saturday he wanted to become a Swan, signing a four-year deal with the premiers.

Adelaide's ability to strike a suitable deal for the 104-game player is seen as the major roadblock to several other trades taking place early in the Gillette AFL Trade Period.

The Crows have made it clear that a gentleman's agreement to do their best to trade Tippett to the club of his choice will not be honoured if he chooses a club outside of Queensland.

Young Sun Josh Caddy is in hot demand after announcing his desire to move back to Victoria last month.

Gold Coast football manager Marcus Ashcroft told AFL.com.au earlier in the week that he was confident of striking a deal once Caddy settled on a destination.

"Josh and his management are talking to several Melbourne-based clubs," Ashcroft said.

"I'm not totally sure which clubs those are, so until we get to a point where he has a bit of an idea of where he wants to go - and those clubs come to us with an option to deal - then we can't really speculate on the detail as to what that trade may look like.

"But I'm confident we'll be able to find a suitable trade. We just need to make sure that it's in the best interests of our football club."

The Lions, who made a huge play for Tippett during last year's trade week, will turn their attention to signing free agent Demon Brent Moloney or Hawthorn winger Clinton Young if they are unsuccessful in luring the key forward.

Dealings between Collingwood and West Coast for Sharrod Wellingham, who attended the Pies' best and fairest count on Friday night, could get ugly with the Pies demanding healthy compensation for the midfielder.

The Eagles are understood to have told Collingwood there will be no deal involving defender Mitch Brown, twin brother of Pie Nathan.

AFL.com.au understands Port Adelaide has also tabled an offer to Wellingham.

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire promised Pie fans the club would drive a hard bargain to get the right compensation for Wellingham.

"He's saying that he might want to go there and now the West Coast Eagles will need to come up with something fairly substantial to get the deal done," McGuire told Triple M.

"Hopefully things will work out, but that will be, of course, everyone coming to their senses and offering decent compensation."

Meanwhile, new Richmond recruit Troy Chaplin has shot back at his former club Port Adelaide, after they admitted concerns about Chaplin's long-term future after he suffered a knee injury early in 2012.

"I was a little bit disappointed because I still catch up with the physio weekly and there hasn't been an issue," Chaplin told the Herald Sun.

"I suppose they've got to do their due diligence, and if they didn't think that was a fair deal, then that's up to them. But I caught up with the Richmond doctor and physio, and they've got no problems with it.

"That's (Port's) view and Richmond have given me another view and I'm obviously coming over here to go with theirs."

In other trade news, Geelong is reported to be no closer to dealing for North Melbourne ruckman Hamish McIntosh, who has requested a move to the Cats.
