SYDNEY Swans assistant coach John Blakey has said the club will not be tempted to play Adam Goodes in the midfield for this weekend's elimination final against North Melbourne at ANZ Stadium if he is not fit to do so.

Goodes has been limited to roles in the forward line due to a groin complaint and was rested for the Swans' victory over Brisbane at the weekend.

"We are dictated by how his body is," Blakey said.

"Obviously we can't just throw him back in there if he's not capable of running up and down the ground. It's something we'll have to monitor during the week and hopefully he'll get out and train a bit more.

"If he's good enough to play in the midfield, he'll play in the midfield. If not he'll play in the forward line, so we'll just have to wait and see how he comes up."

Blakey said he is hopeful that the dual Brownlow Medalist's week off will enable him to return to the team's engine room.

"When he's up and running we're a far better side; there's no doubt about it. We miss his drive and his flair that he's given us over many years. So hopefully he can come back and just give us a little bit of that."

Blakey complimented the playing group on playing "Swans footy" in their 61-point victory over the Lions and said the group will take confidence from a round 22 return to form.

"We had to get back to playing Swans' footy. We're at our best when we win the contested footy, and on Saturday night we won the contested footy for the first time in probably six or seven weeks. It makes a massive difference."
