Drummond injured his anterior cruciate ligament in the side's loss to Fremantle on Saturday night at the Gabba.
A traditional knee reconstruction usually means the player is sidelined for about a year, but LARS surgery - Ligament Augmentation and Reconstruction System - can cut that back to a few months.
The most recent LARS example is that of Port midfielder David Rodan, who was back playing just over four months after having the surgery.
So good was Rodan in just his second game back that he was adjudged best on the ground in the Showdown, a notoriously tough and hard match.
Carlton's Brad Fisher has also undergone the procedure.
Lions club surgeon Dr Jim Fardoulys was able to successfully perform the surgery on Drummond's left knee, and the club said in a statement that while the injury was still a severe one, the procedure meant Drummond may be able to return later in the season.
Sydney Swans defender Nick Malceski, who was the first to have the radical procedure in 2008, talked to both Rodan and Fisher before they decided to undergo the new-style surgery.
"I guess it has given them confidence, knowing that it's worked for me. I'd recommend it to anyone and anyone who wants advice, I'm happy to give it," he said.
