EF1: Last weeks winner, Patrick Malone

Six year old Patrick Malone from Melbourne won this great opportunity to run through the banner with Richie Vandenberg at last weekend's Elimination Final against the Crows.

Here is his story - told by his Mother Lidia Malone.

I have spent much of the footy season in tears.  I have had one thought repeating in my head.  When is my six year old going to take a five minute break from talking about football?  He was driving me crazy!  Finally it was getting close to the end of the season...except my husband found something.  A once in a lifetime opportunity to be the mascot for the Hawk's at the Elimination Final!  I had to enter Patrick.  I have never met a child so passionate about football, about his Hawks, about running through the banner!

To my amazement I got the phone call and he won.  Patrick was going to run through the banner!  It was a build-up for a couple of days.  We got hair and clothes organised and an extra finals ticket for me.  I had to sit out a game of football to complete the dream for my son.

Saturday September 8, 2007.  Off we went to the football.  I was so excited for Patrick.  After a bit of waiting and a quick chat off he went onto the ground to await his heroes.  My eyes welled up with tears and when I looked at him, he looked hesitant.  I took a deep breath and smiled.  Soon the Hawks approached and within a few minutes my little man together with the special guys that guided him ripped through banner.  I felt the very same as the day I'd first looked into Patrick's eyes and realised I had just given birth to him!

We went back to our seats and it was time for me to stick out my first game at the football.  Before long I realised why there were so many people there, why grown men were crying.  This wasn't just a game...this was the the dream of so many.  I was seat amidst a sea of brown and gold.  My heart was pounding at my throat and I found myself shaking.  We just had to win the game.  Someone in the crowd was telling me the game only had seconds to go and the Crows were up when Buddy was about to kick towards the goals.  I turned my head, I couldn't look.  When that man kicked the ball through the goal, when the siren sounded and the Hawks won something happened.  I became a real Hawk!

I am so proud of my six year old son dreams of becoming a Hawk.  I will support him in everyway I can should his dream continue.  I only have one regret...

Why didn't I go to a game sooner!
