The Swans Reserves posted another convincing win on Sunday beating Eastlake, who were sitting in second position, by 177 points at the SCG in the curtain raiser to the Swans and Carlton game.

The Swans started the game with two goals - the first went to Ed Barlow from a mark at 25 metres and the second to Earl Shaw which he kicked from 35 metres out - before Eastlake kicked their first.

After Eastlake kicked their first, the Swans kicked another three goals before the end of the term. Jonathan Simpkin kicked his first from a snap while Simon Phillips kicked one after a mark and Barlow goaled for the second time from 30 metres.

In the second quarter the Swans kept Eastlake goalless, only allowing them to post three behinds, and added a massive eleven goals to their own score.

Matthew Laidlaw goaled first, followed by Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Simpkin and Jarred Moore. At the 15-minute mark Daniel Currie took a strong mark 30 metres out and goaled. After a mark 40 metres out, Laidlaw kicked his second goal which was quickly followed with a goal from Luke Brennan.

From the 27 minute mark the Swans kicked another four goals. Ben Haines, a top-up player, kicked one on the run, Shaw goaled after a free kick, Nick Smith kicked his first and Brennan kicked his second as a result of a strong mark. At half time the Swans were leading by 92 points.

Heath Grundy opened the third term with two quick goals and Phillips and Barlow followed suit to put the Swans 116 points in front by the ten minute mark. Grundy then kicked his third goal for the quarter after a mark 20 metres out and Simpkin kicked his third for the game.

Grundy made it four for the quarter before Sam Rowe goaled from a free kick downfield and Matthew O’Dwyer ended the quarter with a goal from 20 metres to extend the Reserves lead to 147 points at three quarter time.

In the last quarter the Swans took their foot of the pedal and only kicked six goals while conceding one to Eastlake late. After a mark and 50-metre penalty Bart Mill, another top-up player, kicked the Swans first which was followed by another goal from Grundy and one from Roberts-Thomson after a snap.

Eighteen minutes into the quarter Grundy made it six goals for the game and two minutes later Laidlaw marked 50 metres out and goaled. At the 22-minute mark Eastlake kicked their second and last goal for the game. Grundy ended the quarter with his seventh goal for the game.

Barlow was best on ground for the Swans at centre half-forward and Laidlaw and Kieren Jack were also impressive. Moore, playing in the midfield, also made the Swans’ best yet again as did Kristin Thornton rotating between half-back and the midfield.

Grundy, who was drafted from Norwood in the 2004 Rookie Draft, was another solid performer playing at centre half-back for the first half before moving to full-forward and kicking seven goals.

On Saturday 21 July the Swans Reserves take on the Canberra Wildcats, who have not won a game so far this season. The game will be played at Manuka Oval in Canberra at 2 pm.
