THE AFL wishes to advise the match review panel has reviewed the weekend’s matches.

The following charges were laid:

Campbell Brown, Hawthorn, has been charged with a level three striking offence against Nick Dal Santo, St Kilda, during the first quarter of the round 17 match between Hawthorn and St Kilda, played at Etihad Stadium on Friday July 23, 2010.

In summary, his previous poor record means that his two-game sanction must remain at two games, even with an early plea.
 
The incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), medium impact (two points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a level three offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of two matches suspended within the last three years, which increases the penalty by 20 per cent to 270 demerit points. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 202.50 points and a two-game sanction.
 
Ashton Hams, West Coast, has been charged with a level four engaging in rough conduct offence against Dennis Armfield, Carlton, during the second quarter of the round 17 match between West Coast and Carlton, played at Subiaco on Saturday July 24, 2010.
 
In summary, he can accept a three-match sanction with an early plea.
 
The incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), high impact (three points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of seven activation points, resulting in a classification of a level four offence, drawing 425 demerit points and a four-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 318.75 points and a three-match sanction.
 
Ben Cunnington, North Melbourne, has been charged with a first offence for making negligent contact with an umpire (Jason Armstrong) during the first quarter of the round 17 match between North Melbourne and Essendon, played at Etihad Stadium on Saturday July 24, 2010.
 
In summary, he can accept a $900 sanction with an early plea.

Graham Johncock, Adelaide Crows, has been charged with a level three engaging in rough conduct offence against Cameron Hitchcock, Port Adelaide, during the second quarter of the round 17 match between the Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide, played at AAMI Stadium on Sunday July 25, 2010.
 
In summary, due to his five-year good record, he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea.
 
The incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), medium impact (two points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a level three offence, drawing 325 demerit points and a three-match sanction. He has an existing five-year good record, which reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 243.75 points and a two-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 182.81 points and a one-match sanction.
 
Other incidents assessed
The match day report laid against the Brisbane Lions’ Brent Staker for striking the Geelong Cats’ Darren Milburn was assessed. It was the view of the panel that Staker was attempting to tackle the Geelong player. Initial contact was made to Milburn’s back and Staker’s hand was open at all times, in a tackling motion. The action was not considered to be a striking motion and no further action was taken.
 
The match day report laid against Carlton’s Jarrad Waite for engaging in rough conduct against West Coast’s Adam Selwood was assessed. The panel said that Selwood had kicked the ball when Waite made contact with a bump. Contact was made to Selwood’s shoulder area and the action was not considered to be a reportable offence. No further action was taken.
 
Contact between St Kilda’s Stephen Milne and Hawthorn’s Thomas Murphy from the first quarter of Friday’s match was assessed. The panel said contact was made with an open hand and it was their view that the contact was a pushing motion. The medical report on player Murphy said he was not assessed after the incident and he required no medical treatment for the contact. No further action was taken.
 
Contact between the Brisbane Lions’ Matt Maguire and the Geelong Cats’ Steve Johnson from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was investigated. The panel conducted an investigation into the contact that was made after the vision available was not conclusive. Based on the evidence received from both parties, the investigation determined the contact was accidental and no further action was taken.
