While the race to the AFL finals is intense on the field, off the field North Melbourne is also in with a chance for a significant victory with The Huddle confirmed as a finalist for the prestigious 2011 Melbourne Awards on Tuesday.
While the winner will be announced at the Gala Awards Ceremony held at Melbourne Town Hall on Saturday, 27 August, the nomination itself is great recognition of the club’s innovative community classroom which has created a real difference for people of all ages and from all walks of life.
Recognised for its dedication to improve social cohesion in the local and surrounding areas, particularly targeting disengagement among young people, The Huddle has become a unique and integral part of the club.
Opened in 2010, thousands of people have strolled through The Huddle’s doors and left with vital life skills and invaluable education. Nominated in the ‘Contribution to Community by a Community Organisation’ category, The Huddle offers a range of innovative educational and community programs, working with local primary and secondary schools as well as community groups and partner organisations.
Students from almost every school in North Melbourne, Kensington and Flemington have visited the facility at least once with club continuing to embrace and reengage with its local community.
