Lions full-forward Brendan Fevola will notch up a significant milestone this Saturday night when he lines up for his 200th AFL match against Richmond at the Gabba.

The 29 year-old has enjoyed a stellar career that has spanned 12 seasons and produced 616 goals.

He played 187 matches and booted 575 goals in over a decade with Carlton from 1999-2009 before being traded to the Lions at the end of last year.

Fevola has played every match for his new Club in 2010 and currently leads the Lions’ goal-kicking with 41 from 12 games.

He is still widely recognised as one of the game’s most exciting and entertaining players and has achieved plenty throughout his career.

But among a long list of individual accolades that would be the envy of most players, Fevola still credits his first ever AFL game as one of his most memorable moments in football.

“Obviously playing my first game was a big thrill,” Fevola told SEN radio in Melbourne.

“I remember conking down in my car on the way to the MCG from Narre Warren. Luckily enough, mum came and picked me up.”

“I ended up being late to the ground and David Parkin wasn’t too rapt with that,” he said.

“I think I played 10 minutes of that game and got one handball.”

“My first game was against the Pies in Round 17 of 1999 and then I played against the Bulldogs the following week before getting dropped. We ended up playing in the Grand Final against the Kangaroos that year.”

“The next year I had a big pre-season and then we played that Millennium game - which was more of an exhibition than a real game. I was lucky enough to kick a couple in that game (12 goals).”

After managing just two matches in his debut season, Fevola has since gone on to become a two-time Coleman Medallist, seven-time Club leading goal-kicker and three-time All-Australian.

He has certainly come a long way since being drafted to the Blues with Pick No.38 in 1998 AFL National Draft.

“I came in as a pimply-faced 17 year-old that weighed around 87kg. Now I’m out to 103kg,” Fevola said.

“My skin folds are currently the lowest they have ever been. But I think the white shorts make my butt look a little bit big. I’ve got to keep away from those white shorts.”

His 200-game milestone will be shared by his family who will travel to Brisbane for the occasion.

The proud father will of three will lead the Lions out onto the field with his daughters Mia, Leni and Lulu.

“They’ll be wearing jumpers with No.5 and ‘Dad’ on their back,” he said. “It’s going to be a special moment.”
He will also get the chance to toss the coin alongside Richmond Captain Chris Newman who was coincidentally the best man at Fevola’s wedding.

“It will be a great honour to toss the coin - I’ve never done it before,” Fevola said.

“Doing it next to Chris will be something special as well. I’ve got a bit of a history with Chris. We grew up together from when I was three and he was two.”

“We lived next door to each other until the day I moved out which was when I was 18. We’re best mates and have a great friendship.”
