Sydney Swans midfielder Kieren Jack says the playing group is confident their best football is capable of taking it up to reigning premiers Collingwood at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.

Speaking ahead of training at the SCG this morning, Jack said that last weekend’s loss to Carlton hadn’t broken the players’ resolve and they would be intent on ending a run of nine straight home-and-away losses against the Magpies dating back to round 13, 2005.

“I don’t think anyone outside of this footy club is going to give us much of a chance,” Jack said.

“We certainly know that if we get 22 blokes performing and ready to play four quarters, we’re definitely a chance to beat this mob.

“I’ve never beaten Collingwood, and I say the same thing every year - something’s got to change.

“This week we really want to come out and rectify (last week) and we’re not going to hold anything back,” he said.

Saturday night will mark exactly six years since the Swans held on for a thrilling one-point win in their last victory over Collingwood, and Jack said nothing more than a focused, four-quarter effort would get the job done against the 2010 AFL premiers.

“There have been times this year where we haven’t performed four quarter efforts and probably got away with a win,” he said.

“Against Collingwood you can’t afford to do that.

“In the space of a quarter they can stretch teams and put a lot of points on the board, so we’ve got to come prepared.”

After winning the contested possession count and inside 50s against Carlton last Sunday, Jack said the team now had to focus on improving its skill execution after the Blues made them pay on the scoreboard for a string of turnovers in the second and third quarters.

“Clearly from last week we want to use the ball better and execute better under pressure, but if we do that and don’t win the contested ball then that will be really disappointing as well,” Jack said.

“There’s a few things we’ve got to work on, and we won’t be happy unless we come away with a win.

“No one’s been walking around with their heads down (after last week). It’s a short week, back on the horse, and we’ll test ourselves again.

“We’re confident we can win.”

Swans coach John Longmire reiterated Jack’s thoughts that the team’s skill execution needed to improve, and there would be no better test than against Collingwood’s pressure.

“We’re the number one tackling team in the competition and our defence has been holding up pretty well, but we need to execute a little bit better under the type of pressure that those best teams deliver,” Longmire said.

“We know that with Collingwood’s talent level, that we’re going to have to have 22 players playing well for four quarters.

“They’re obviously fit and hungry and they’ve got players who are match-hardened in finals footy."

Jack pointed to one area the Swans could gain an advantage over the Magpies - a sea of red and white at ANZ Stadium.

"We want a big crowd out there," he said. "We need every advantage we can get, and hopefully we can put on a good show.

"We want to reward the fans for turning up."

The Swans team for Saturday night will be announced on sydneyswans.com.au at 5pm this afternoon.
